Description
Thread measuring wire ø6.35 mm is a precision-ground tool steel wire used in the three-wire method to verify the pitch diameter of screw threads. The three-wire method provides more accurate pitch diameter measurements than direct reading with a thread micrometer — three wires of identical diameter (maintained as a matched set in the inspection laboratory) create a measurement geometry that cancels out first-order errors.
Wire diameter ø6.35 mm. Lapped to tight tolerances, hardened, and supplied with documented diameter calibration. Use a matching thread micrometer or universal micrometer for the actual measurement step.
Usage: select three wires with a diameter matched to the thread pitch (the manufacturer’s table provides the correct wire diameter for a specific thread pitch). Place two wires in adjacent grooves on one side of the thread, and one on the opposite side. Measure over the wires with a standard outside micrometer. Apply the three-wire formula: pitch diameter = M − 3w + 0.866p (where M is the over-wire reading, w is the wire diameter, and p is the thread pitch).
Common applications: thread QC inspection in machine shops performing screw machining, calibration lab thread form verification, line-side QC on thread cutting operations, and all applications where direct thread micrometer readings need to be verified against the more accurate three-wire reference.
